Pakistan India Tension Shapes Regional Shifts in Afghanistan, Bangladesh

What is happening in Afghanistan and Bangladesh should not be looked at separately. When these events are seen together, it becomes clear that rising tension between Pakistan and India is a key factor behind them.

For many years, India has used Afghanistan to put pressure on Pakistan. From Afghan territory, efforts were made to create violence and instability inside Pakistan. The goal was to warn Pakistan that any strong response to India would lead to pressure on two sides — India in the east and Afghanistan in the west. The idea was to keep Pakistan busy on multiple fronts and drain its strength

In recent months, the situation has started to change. Events in Bangladesh have changed the situation in the region. Protests against Sheikh Hasina’s government, the killing of a student movement leader, and Bangladesh’s claim that the suspect escaped to India have all added to tensions between Dhaka and New Delhi.

Bangladesh asking for the suspect’s return, along with rising public anger toward India, shows that India’s hold there is weakening.

This issue has moved beyond diplomacy. Statements by Bangladeshi leaders about India’s northeastern states, known as the “Seven Sisters,” have raised concern in India. This region is already sensitive and depends on Bangladesh for land access to the rest of India. If relations worsen, this could become a serious problem for New Delhi.

Pakistan has also made its position clear. If India attempts aggression, false-flag actions, or efforts to create instability, pressure will not remain one-sided. Unlike before, India now faces the risk of pressure from more than one direction.

Pakistan’s approach shows that its foreign policy is changing. It is no longer tied to one side and is trying to keep balance in its relations. Closer ties with China, better relations with Iran, stronger defense links with Turkey and Saudi Arabia, and more contact with Russia all reflect this shift. At the same time, Pakistan has continued to maintain practical relations with the United States rather than cutting them off.

India, in contrast, appears more limited. Tensions with China, problems in Bangladesh, and a smaller circle of regional support have reduced its room to act.

If these trends continue, Pakistan may appear as a more stable and balanced country in the region in the coming years.
